Kilmainham Gaol is one of the largest unoccupied gaols in Europe, covering some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland’s emergence as a modern nation from 1780’s to the 1920’s.
It has aptly been described as the “Irish Bastille”.
Many Irish revolutionaries, including the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, were imprisoned and executed in the prison.
2016 marks the centenary of the Easter Rising which began on Easter Monday with the reading of the proclamation by Padraig Pearse.
